FarmFitMomma, Titan Unite to Promote Mental & Physical Wellness
“The reason why a lot of people are scared to seek mental-health help when they need help is because it’s viewed as a weakness. But I believe that if you talk about mental health, that actually shows your strength,” said Amanda Nigg, known as FarmFitMomma on social media and the founder of Farm Fit Training. She understands that deeply because she lived through a particularly painful time in 2020. The day before the world changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Nigg lost her family home — located on her husband’s fifth-generation farm in Sisseton, South Dakota — in a fire. Suddenly, her comfortable life selling supplemental farm insurance became strikingly uncomfortable. Her own mental health difficulties soon followed.

National FFA Week – February 18-25, 2023
National FFA Week was initiated by the National Future Farmers of America Organization — a youth leadership organization, and one of the largest in the U.S., to make a positive difference in the lives of young people by developing their potential for leadership, personal growth, and career success through agriculture education. First founded by a group of young farmers in 1928, the FFA mission, during National FFA Week, is to prepare future generations for the challenges of feeding the growing population of the United States by teaching members various topics relating to agricultural technology, science, and business, i.e., Ag Business, Ag Mechanics, Ag Sales, Dairy cattle evaluation, and Agronomy, Food Science & Technology, and Dairy Food, etc. Each year, all 700,000 FFA members spend the weeklong holiday developing their potential for leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education in creative and innovative ways in their various local FFA chapters. During the week, FFA members will take part in agricultural, leadership, and service-based activities across the country.

Soybean Growers Look to Expand Aquaculture
Domestic fish farming has diminished in recent decades, with imports dramatically horning in on U.S. production. While an active industry exists, the United States imports about 90% of fish and seafood consumed here, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Economic realities have moved much production overseas, especially to China and Southeast Asia. Efforts are underway to produce more fish domestically, though there are challenges. “There is a lot of opportunity to expand aquaculture in the United States,” said Caird Rexroad, USDA’s national program leader for aquaculture. “We have the natural resources needed for a successful industry. But some changes are needed to make that happen.”

USDA Announces Conservation Reserve Program Signup for 2023
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that agricultural producers and private landowners can begin applying for the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) General signup starting February 27 through April 7, 2023. CRP is a cornerstone voluntary conservation program offered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and a key tool in the Biden-Harris administration’s effort to address climate change and help agricultural communities invest in the long-term well-being of their land and natural resources. “The Conservation Reserve Program is one of the largest private lands conservation programs in the United States, offering a range of conservation options to farmers, ranchers and landowners,” Vilsack said. “CRP has and continues to be a great fit for farmers with less productive or marginal cropland, helping them re-establish valuable land cover to help improve water quality, prevent soil erosion, and support wildlife habitat. Under this administration, we have made several updates to the program to increase producer interest and enrollment, strengthen the climate benefits of the program and help ensure underserved producers can find a pathway to entry into CRP.”
