Syngenta, Researchers Agree That Starting Clean, Weed-Free Fields is Key to Higher Yields
As the calendar turned the page to 2021, Syngenta turned to its panel of a dozen university agricultural experts for insights on how to both prepare for a high-yield growing season and implement weed management practices that will pay dividends for years to come. Researchers emphasize that early-season weed management is the key. "The biggest point that has been reinforced through our research is the value of early-season weed control," said Charlie Cahoon, Ph.D., extension weed specialist at NC State University. "We have seen a 13- to 33-bushel yield advantage in corn when we start the season clean with a pre-emergent followed by a timely post-emergent herbicide, compared to a post-emergent-only system."

Swine Specialist Helps Students Learn About the Industry
Many students learn best by doing, by seeing something in action. At the University of Missouri swine teaching barn here, animal science students get to do just that. On a January morning, Tim Safranski was at work out at the teaching barn, which he says has been helpful for the pork industry and for MU’s swine program. Safranski is a state swine specialist for MU Extension. “It’s a real benefit for agriculture,” he says. Safranski has had a lifelong interest in pigs, “I tell people I’m a pig farmer that went to school too long,” he says.
